You agree to the terms of service below, and the Terms of Use for Substack, the technology provider.

Last updated: 8 September 2026

These Terms govern subscriptions to and use of TEE™ (“TEE”), an independent publication operated by James S. Bayley.

By subscribing to, purchasing, or otherwise using TEE, you agree to these Terms. Your use of the Substack platform is also subject to Substack’s own terms and policies. TEE’s Terms govern the relationship between you and TEE as publisher. Substack

1. About TEE

TEE is a publication about making systems clear, simple, and beautiful.

It publishes essays, commentary and other material exploring subjects including design, business, psychology, technology, systems thinking, work and life.

TEE is an independent publication and may evolve over time.

2. Free subscriptions

Free subscribers receive access to selected TEE articles, emails, previews and other material made available to free readers.

The frequency, format and availability of free content may change over time.

You may unsubscribe from emails at any time.

3. Paid subscriptions

Paid subscribers receive the benefits described on the TEE subscription page at the time of purchase. These may include:

  • access to every new TEE article;

  • access to the TEE archive; and

  • access to subscriber community features.

Unless otherwise stated at checkout, subscriptions renew automatically at the applicable monthly or annual interval until cancelled.

The price, billing frequency and renewal terms applicable to your subscription will be displayed before purchase.

You may cancel renewal through your Substack account. Cancellation normally prevents the next renewal rather than immediately removing access for a period already paid for.

Automatic-renewal terms must be presented transparently and cancellation must not be made unreasonably difficult. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you may have under UK consumer law. GOV.UK

4. Patron subscriptions

Patrons receive the benefits of a paid subscription together with any additional Patron benefits described by TEE.

Patron membership is also intended as a way of providing additional financial support for TEE’s long-term development.

Patron benefits may include closer access to ideas and experiments, occasional Patron updates, discussions, feedback opportunities, or opportunities to help shape what TEE explores next.

These benefits do not guarantee:

  • a particular quantity or frequency of Patron-only content;

  • individual consultation or direct access to James S. Bayley;

  • implementation of suggestions or feedback; or

  • any ownership, investment, voting, employment or other legal interest in TEE.

Patron benefits may evolve as the publication develops.

5. Group subscriptions

TEE may offer group subscriptions allowing an organisation or individual to purchase access for multiple people.

Group subscriptions are subject to the pricing, minimum group size and benefits displayed at the time of purchase.

Each person receiving access remains responsible for complying with these Terms.

Group access may not be resold or transferred outside the subscribing organisation or intended group without permission.

6. Billing, cancellation and refunds

Payments are administered through Substack and its payment provider, Stripe.

TEE does not store your complete payment-card details.

You may cancel a recurring subscription using the subscription-management tools provided by Substack.

Any statutory cancellation or refund rights available to you remain unaffected by these Terms. Where UK consumer law provides a cooling-off, cancellation, refund or other right, that right will apply. Online sellers must provide consumers with specified pre-contract information, including pricing, duration and cancellation conditions. GOV.UK

Outside any legal entitlement, discretionary refunds may be considered individually but are not guaranteed.

7. Changes to prices and subscriptions

TEE may change its subscription prices or structure from time to time.

Any change affecting an existing recurring subscription will be communicated and implemented in accordance with applicable law and the billing arrangements provided by Substack.

TEE will not retrospectively change the price of a subscription period that has already been paid for.

8. Intellectual property

Unless otherwise stated, the writing, branding, graphics, photography and original material published by TEE are owned by or licensed to James S. Bayley.

Your subscription grants you personal access to the content. It does not transfer ownership of that content.

You are welcome to:

  • share links to TEE articles;

  • quote reasonable excerpts with appropriate attribution; and

  • discuss or reference ideas published by TEE.

You may not, without permission:

  • reproduce or republish substantial articles in full;

  • distribute paid content to people who do not have access;

  • sell, sublicense or commercially redistribute TEE material;

  • systematically scrape or archive the publication; or

  • use substantial amounts of TEE content to create datasets or train artificial-intelligence models.

Nothing in this section restricts rights available to you under applicable copyright law.

9. Comments, chat and community

TEE may provide comments, chat or other community spaces.

When participating, please engage constructively and do not post material that is unlawful, abusive, threatening, discriminatory, deliberately disruptive, infringing, deceptive or invasive of another person’s privacy.

I may moderate, hide or remove contributions, or restrict access to community features, where reasonably necessary to protect TEE or its readers.

Serious or repeated misuse may result in removal from community features or termination of access.

10. Editorial independence

Subscribing to TEE does not give a reader control over its editorial decisions.

Suggestions, comments and Patron feedback are welcomed, but final decisions about what TEE publishes, investigates, recommends or develops remain with James S. Bayley.

11. General information, not professional advice

TEE contains essays, opinions and educational material intended for general information and discussion.

Unless expressly stated otherwise, TEE content should not be treated as personalised professional, legal, financial, medical, cybersecurity, engineering or other regulated advice.

You remain responsible for determining whether information is appropriate to your particular circumstances and for obtaining appropriate professional advice where necessary.

12. Accuracy and availability

I aim to make TEE thoughtful and accurate, but I cannot guarantee that every statement will always be complete, current or error-free.

Views may also develop or change over time.

TEE or particular features may occasionally be unavailable because of maintenance, technical problems, changes to Substack, or circumstances outside my reasonable control.

13. Liability

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability that cannot legally be excluded under consumer law.

Subject to those rights, TEE is not responsible for losses arising solely from reliance on general editorial content where it would not be reasonable to treat that content as personalised professional advice.

Consumer contract terms must remain fair and transparent, and statutory consumer protections cannot simply be contracted away. GOV.UK

14. Ending access

You may unsubscribe or cancel your subscription at any time through Substack.

TEE may suspend or terminate access where reasonably necessary because of serious misuse, unlawful activity, non-payment, breach of these Terms, or risks to TEE or other readers.

Any termination will remain subject to applicable consumer rights.

15. Privacy

Personal information is handled in accordance with the TEE™ Privacy Policy.

Privacy enquiries can be sent to privacy@tee.ink.

16. Changes to these Terms

These Terms may be updated as TEE develops, including to reflect new services, subscription models or legal requirements.

Material changes affecting existing subscribers will be communicated where required.

The latest version will display its revision date.

17. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

If you are a consumer, nothing in this section removes any mandatory legal rights or protections available to you because of where you live.
