Welcome to TEE

TEE publishes essays on simplicity, craft, and effort well spent.

TEE is for thoughtful engineers, designers, leaders, creators, and professionals who care not only about what they achieve, but how they get there.

Written from an engineer’s perspective, TEE brings together design, business, psychology, technology, and systems thinking to explore the forces shaping how we work and live.

Each edition is designed to leave you with something useful: an idea to consider, a question to ask, a framework to apply, or a different way of seeing your own journey.

Our manifesto

The clearest way to explain TEE is to answer three questions: why does it exist, who does it serve, and what does it contribute?

  • TEE is what I would love to see in the world: I want TEE to inspire people to live more authentic lives.

    • If it encourages someone to step off the hamster wheel, question the path they have inherited, and move towards a life of greater authorship, then it has succeeded.

    • TEE exists to help people approach work and life with greater clarity, simplicity, and intention. It is for those who want to do meaningful work, make better choices, create things of value, and spend their effort on what genuinely matters.

  • TEE helps people navigate change: it is a collection of my thoughts, feelings, lessons, and experiences. It is my way of helping people at scale.

    • I have changed direction many times in my life, and each transition has been difficult. I kept moving forwards despite the anguish, confusion, depression, and anxiety.

    • I followed what made me curious, ignored the noise where I could, rediscovered interests I had left behind, and gradually leaned further into the person I had always been.

    • TEE does not pretend that change is easy. It offers companionship, guidance, and candid reflection for those moving through it.

  • TEE is positive, zesty, and refreshing: it is honest, transparent, and human.

    • Its writing speaks directly to people. It aims to make you feel something, cut through the noise, and help you see the world differently.

    • TEE is bright, just like your future.

  • TEE is for those who feel out of step with the world: if your view of the world no longer aligns with what the media, algorithms, and people around you are shouting at you to believe, you are not alone.

    • In fact, you are in very good company.

    • TEE is for people questioning established definitions of work, progress, ambition, and success. It is for those looking for thoughtful guidance, honest conversation, or simply the reassurance that somebody else understands.

  • TEE is a little comfort and familiarity in your inbox: each time an email arrives, know that you are among people asking many of the same questions.

    • You are part of a community that understands what it means to reconsider your direction, feel uncertain about what comes next, and search for a more thoughtful way forwards.

    • You are not travelling alone.

  • TEE is your permission to breathe: it is permission to take your foot off the gas, slow down, create some space, and decide what you genuinely care about.

    • It is for those who suspect that the working world is no longer working for them, and who want to believe that another way of living is possible.

    • Wherever you are today, stick with us.

Our guiding principles

  • The Journey Matters: outcomes matter, but they are not the whole story.

    • The choices we make, the environments we create, the people we meet, the detours we take, and the effort we invest all shape who we become.

    • A worthwhile life is not measured only by where we arrive. How we get there matters too.

  • Choose small and simple: bigger is not always better, and complexity is not the same as progress.

    • TEE values independence, intimacy, clarity, thoughtful restraint, manageable systems, and quality over scale.

    • Choosing small and simple means building work, businesses, systems, and lives that remain meaningful, sustainable, and human.

Explore the collections

TEE’s editorial work is organised into six collections, each exploring a different part of work and life.

Together, they offer thoughtful essays, practical ideas, useful frameworks, and candid reflections on building a better career, business, environment, and life.

  1. Handmade explores how to build a small, meaningful, and sustainable business without becoming trapped by growth. It is about creating something profitable, pleasurable, and portable, while preserving the freedom to enjoy the process.

  2. Decision Space explores how the environments around us shape the choices we make. Drawing on systems thinking, behavioural science, Experience Design, and cognitive load, it considers how better conditions can support better decisions and outcomes.

  3. Optimal Engineer explores how to build a better career without sacrificing the person doing the work. It offers thoughtful, practical ideas for doing meaningful work, continuing to grow, and making your effort count.

  4. Thoughtful Imprints explores how to leave the people, work, and world around us a little better than we found them. It considers how kindness, authenticity, reflection, craft, and intentional living can help us leave a mark that matters.

  5. Get Well Soon offers a thoughtful pause for wellbeing. It shares practical, evidence-led ideas to help you rest, reset, protect your health, and feel a little more human.

  6. Words That Move Us explores the quotations, books, and ideas that stay with us. It ranges from a single sentence that changes how we see something to deeper reflections and thoughtful conversations about books worth sharing.

James S. Bayley, the engineer, designer, writer, and podcaster behind TEE, exploring how thoughtful work can support a more intentional life.

About the author

James S. Bayley is an engineer, designer, writer, podcaster, and toolmaker working at the intersection of structural engineering, software, Experience Design, and human experience.

His career has evolved from designing buildings and analysing tall structures to creating software, shaping digital strategy, and improving the tools and systems used by engineers. Today, James is Software Architecture Lead for WSP UK Structures. He also contributes to the future of the profession through the Institution of Structural Engineers and Birmingham City University.

TEE is where these different threads come together. James draws on professional experience, changing careers, living with obsessive-compulsive disorder, navigating ambition and burnout, and learning to distinguish genuine fulfilment from conventional ideas of success. Whether he is creating a building, a piece of software, an essay, a podcast, a speech, or a conversation, his ambition remains the same: to leave a thoughtful imprint.

James also presents The Journey Matters by TEE, a podcast exploring the choices, systems, experiences, and lessons that shape who we become.

The origin story

TEE began as The Engineering Experience™, a publication rooted in engineering, Experience Design, and a desire to make work clearer, simpler, and more human.

As its ideas expanded beyond engineering and into the wider experience of work and life, the publication became simply TEE™: a broader home for exploring the choices, systems, experiences, and lessons that shape who we become.

TEE is also easier to say three times fast.
