TEE™ is an independent publication operated by James S. Bayley (“TEE”, “I”, “me”).

This Privacy Policy explains how personal information is collected, used, and protected when you subscribe to, purchase, read, comment on, or otherwise interact with TEE.

1. Information I collect

TEE is published using Substack. When you interact with TEE, I may receive information including:

• your name and email address;

• your subscription type and status;

• information about when you subscribed, upgraded, cancelled, or changed your subscription;

• engagement information such as email opens, link clicks, and posts viewed;

• comments, chat messages, replies, survey responses, and other information you choose to provide;

• information relating to group subscriptions; and

• limited technical, device, or geographic information made available through Substack.

Substack generally considers publishers to be controllers of their subscriber audience and itself to be a processor when providing publishing tools on their behalf. Substack may also act as a controller for certain processing it conducts independently. Substack

2. Paid subscriptions

Paid subscriptions, including Patron and group subscriptions, are processed through Substack and its payment provider, Stripe.

I may receive information about your payment status, subscription, refunds, and transactions, but I do not receive or store your complete payment-card details.

Stripe processes payment and transaction information under its own privacy arrangements and may act as a controller or processor depending on the activity. Stripe

3. How I use your information

I may use your information to:

• deliver TEE articles, emails, and updates;

• administer free, paid, Patron, and group subscriptions;

• provide access to subscriber-only content and community features;

• process and administer payments;

• respond to messages, questions, or requests;

• understand how people use and engage with TEE;

• improve the publication and reader experience;

• prevent misuse, fraud, or security problems; and

• comply with legal, accounting, tax, or regulatory obligations.

Depending on the circumstances, I may rely on consent, performance of a contract, legitimate interests, or compliance with a legal obligation as the lawful basis for processing your information.

4. Emails and marketing

If you subscribe to TEE, I will use your email address to provide the publication and related subscriber communications.

Every marketing email will provide a straightforward way to unsubscribe.

You have the right to object to your personal information being used for direct marketing at any time. ICO

5. Professional contacts and invitations

I may occasionally contact someone with whom I have an existing professional relationship where I reasonably believe TEE may be relevant to their professional interests.

Having someone’s email address does not, by itself, mean that I consider them a subscriber to TEE.

Where consent is legally required before sending electronic marketing, I will seek appropriate consent rather than treating the person as a subscriber.

Where the law permits relevant communications to corporate business contacts without prior consent, I may rely on legitimate interests, taking into account the context of the relationship, relevance of the communication, and reasonable expectations of the recipient.

Any such communication will provide an opportunity to opt out, and I will respect objections to further marketing.

UK data-protection law continues to apply when a corporate email address identifies an individual, even where the specific PECR consent requirement for electronic marketing to corporate subscribers does not apply. ICO

6. Who I share information with

I do not sell subscriber information to advertisers or data brokers.

Information may be processed by organisations necessary to operate TEE, principally:

• Substack, for publishing, email delivery, subscriptions, community features, and analytics;

• Stripe, for payment processing; and

• professional advisers, regulators, authorities, or other parties where disclosure is reasonably necessary or legally required.

These organisations may process information under their own privacy policies and contractual arrangements.

7. Cookies and analytics

Substack may use cookies, pixels, and similar technologies to operate its platform, remember preferences, measure readership, and provide analytics.

Some processing carried out directly by Substack is governed by Substack’s own privacy policies rather than this policy.

8. International transfers

TEE uses technology providers that operate internationally.

Your personal information may therefore be processed outside the United Kingdom. Where applicable, providers use recognised legal safeguards for international data transfers, such as adequacy arrangements, contractual safeguards, or the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Stripe

9. How long I keep information

I retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected.

Certain information may need to be retained after you unsubscribe or cancel a subscription for purposes including:

• accounting and tax records;

• fraud prevention;

• resolving disputes;

• complying with legal obligations; and

• recording that you have opted out of future communications.

10. Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, UK data-protection law may give you the right to:

• access personal information held about you;

• correct inaccurate information;

• request deletion;

• request restriction of processing;

• object to certain processing;

• receive certain information in a portable format; and

• withdraw consent where processing depends on consent.

You can unsubscribe from TEE emails at any time using the unsubscribe link included in emails.

You also have the right to raise concerns with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data-protection regulator.

11. Security

I take reasonable steps to protect personal information and rely on established service providers such as Substack and Stripe for the principal infrastructure through which subscriber and payment information is processed.

No online service can guarantee absolute security.

12. Changes to this policy

TEE will continue to evolve, and this Privacy Policy may occasionally change to reflect new features, services, providers, or legal requirements.
